It is also a service-type dog used in police work for tracking (search and rescue), detection of drugs, bombs, contraband, cadavers and fire accelerants, as well as service dogs for the disabled.  Labs are famously recognized as the seeing-eye-dog for the blind.  Labs love to fetch and retrieve anything you throw at a distance and will swim endlessly as they also love the water.
